12th weeks of pregnancy, many women experience vomiting throughout their pregnancy. Over-the-counter medication is a strict no-no for pregnant women. But you need not suffer endlessly. Here are some safe and effective home remedies that will help in combating the queasiness experienced during pregnancy.
Home Remedies For Morning Sickness During Pregnancy
1. Ginger:
Ginger works as a very popular and efficient morning sickness home remedy. Sip a cup of freshly brewed ginger tea, sweetened mildly with a small piece of jaggery or a little honey. Or, you can try sucking ginger candies available in the market! Prepare a mixture by swirling in grated ginger, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and a little honey. Take sips of this mixture at regular intervals to soothe the growling tummy and keep nausea and vomiting at bay. At the same time, avoid those sugar-filled ginger cookies as they will just aggravate your queasiness. Excessive use of ginger can have a negative impact on your pregnancy, so use this remedy in moderation.
2. Peppermint:
Women vouch for the goodness of the tea prepared with this herb. It soothes the spasms affecting the stomach. However, peppermint tea is not advisable for women who are prone to heartburns. You can suck on a peppermint candy and avail the same benefits, but make sure you pick one that contains sugar in trace amounts.
3. Red Raspberry Leaf Tea:
Along with easing your morning sickness, studies indicate that using this tea during pregnancy can help in improving blood circulation and the immune system. This herbal tea also fortifies the uterine muscles, while toning up the pelvic muscles, helping the body prepare itself for child birth. It is also known to help in improving the quality of breast milk. While 4 to 5 cups of this tea is permitted during the third trimester, restrict to one cup a day during the first, just to ease your queasiness.
4. Eat At Regular Intervals:
Eat small portions of food every two and half hours. Eat 5 to 6 small, frequent meals every few hours throughout the day. Smaller meals can be digested easily. Never stay hungry. An empty stomach is one of the key causes of nausea. A piece of fruit or a cracker-anything healthy will do. Keep munching; you’ll never hear us say this again!
5. Avoid Fried Foods:
Pregnancy can be wacky at times. You will wake up in the middle of the night, craving French fries or samosas! Say thanks to your hormones! Nevertheless, coming to the facts – avoid these rich, deep-fried delicacies. They will do nothing but worsen your condition. Every time you feel like munching on fried food, sniff a little lemon or take a sip of warm water, and watch the difference.
6. Avoid Caffeine:
There is no restriction when it comes to drinking coffee or tea during pregnancy. Both are permitted, but in restricted amounts. The fatigue and lethargy you experience due to vomiting and/or nausea actually forces you to grab a cup of coffee/tea, which unarguably will help you freshen up. But – in reality, caffeine can actually trigger vomiting. Moreover, when consumed beyond 300 mg a day, caffeine can prove to be harmful for you and your baby. So, coffee lovers out there, watch your cup!
7. Sip Salted Lemon Soda:
I don’t know how many would agree with this, but this does work. I have experienced it during both my pregnancies. Squeeze in a whole, fresh lemon, add salt to taste, and top it up with soda. Sip, sip, and sip! You will feel the burp coming and that is it! Your nausea will vanish!
8. Avoid Sweets:
Sugar, as with fried, fatty foods, is a nausea triggering agent. However, it need not be the same for all. So, if you feel that indulging in sweets and desserts is triggering your nausea, please avoid such stuff.
9. Warm Water:
A glass of lukewarm water can help in soothing your rumbling tummy. Stomach gets upset very fast during pregnancy, especially if you have indulged in some really spicy or fried food. In such cases, please do not forget to sip water.
10. Fennel Seeds:
Fennel seeds are known to possess certain anaesthetic ingredients. Along with a pleasant aroma, these seeds have a flavor quite similar to licorice. Or, you could prepare a concoction by steeping about 1 tsp of these green colored seeds in 225 ml water and then flavor with lemon and honey. Sipping this mixture could also prove to be beneficial.
11. Curry Leaves:
Ayurvedic physicians suggest the use of curry leaf juice along with lime juice and a little honey to prevent morning sickness. Crush about 20 curry leaves along with a little water and extract the juice. Mix with 1 tsp lime juice and a little honey to taste. Consume this, thrice a day, for effective relief from morning sickness.
12. Lemon:
Sniff a freshly sliced lemon to avert nausea. Or just prepare your favorite lemonade, mildly sweetened along with a slice of ginger! Take a sip of this tangy beverage every now and then! A mixture prepared from blending 1 tsp each of lemon juice and mint juice and flavored with crushed ginger and honey can also be sipped twice or thrice a day to obtain relief from this weird situation. If you are feeling too lazy, then buy a packet of lemon candy. Just allow it to dissolve in your mouth!
13. Eucalyptus Oil:
Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a clean handkerchief and keep smelling it at regular intervals or whenever nausea strikes you. The pleasing aroma of this essential oil makes you feel fresh and wards off nausea.
14. Cold Balms:
Vapour rubs and cold balms work quite similar to eucalyptus oil. The pleasing fragrances of menthol and camphor, that are two prominent ingredients of most of these balms, have an amazingly smoothing effect on your stomach. They are handy too! Just keep the box in your handbag and carry it with you. And, when the sickness hits you, just take a sniff!
15. Avoid Scents That Do Not Suit You:
There are some particular scents and smells that can trigger nausea. Garlic, frying onions, paints, petrol, the smell of your laundry or detergent cleaner, floor cleaners, soaps, shampoos – any odour can be a trigger. You might even be forced to change your favorite shampoo – I had to! Do not hesitate. You need to keep yourself away from such triggers to avoid nausea.
16. Cumin:
Cumin, unarguably, is one of the best, time-tested, and easiest home remedies for morning sickness. Just add about ½ tbsp cumin seed powder to a glass of warm water and sip the same. Alternately, you can boil one litre of water and add about 1 tbsp cumin seeds and a pinch of nutmeg to it. Allow the mixture to steep for about 5 minutes. Strain and drink the concoction as and when required for instant relief. Mix ½ tsp cumin seed powder with ¼ tsp cardamom powder and honey and relish it slowly for easing morning sickness.
17. Frozen Foods:
Eat an ice cream – not a whole tub, may be two or three teaspoons. You can also try a frozen fruit popsicle or if you feel these are too sweet for you, then you could try suckling an ice cube. Whichever be your choice, you are bound to feel better with these frozen goodies.
18. Cloves:
These dark brown hued inch-long spice sticks are loaded with anaesthetic and antiseptic properties, which aid in better digestion and keep vomiting and nausea at bay. Just chew two or three cloves after your meal or prepare a tea infused with 4 cloves and sip it. Either way, your nausea is sure to go away. Prepare a mixture of roasted clove powder and honey, consume it at regular intervals, to improve your digestion and keep nausea at bay.

Mint tea is known to offer relief from vomiting during pregnancy. Add 1 tbsp dried mint leaves to 225 ml boiling water, steep for 20 to 30 minutes, strain, and sip. It can prevent nausea by producing excessive amounts of saliva. Just nibble; do not over indulge. If you do not wish to indulge in the regular fried version, you can opt for the baked variants that are available in the market. Also, make sure that you choose the plain salted variant. Strictly no spices, cheese, or any other flavors!
21. Indulge In Midnight Munches:
This is a privilege pregnant women enjoy. You can indulge in midnight snacks, but of course not a calorie laden one. Opt for dairy foods such as a glass of warm milk or low fat yogurt. Dairy foods are natural antacids that will help in neutralizing stomach acids while you sleep. You may also look forward to eating small portions of fruits, handful of nuts, or a bite of protein bar to avoid early morning chaos.
22. Licorice:
Sip a little licorice tea. Studies indicate that this beverage has the potential to offer relief from turmoil experienced within your tummy. If you find the tea a little too strong for your taste, then try your hand at candied licorice or licorice drops.

Keep crackers handy and munch on them as and when you feel like. Don’t worry! They won’t stuff you with calories. Opt for low salt, whole grain crackers for better results.
24. Raw Mango:
This is, by far, the best solution for morning sickness. A slice of freshly sliced raw mango with a dash of salt – Good on your palette and your stomach as well!
