10 Effective Home Remedies For Smelly Hair

Are people avoiding you? Does no one want to sit next to you at the office? Do people refuse to use your towel and pillow and comb? Do you spend hours afterwards, fretting over what could possibly be wrong? It’s not your body odor, it’s not your body language – the answer could be as simple as smelly hair! I’m guessing you never even thought of THAT!
So what causes this seemingly unheard of problem? Most commonly, it’s nothing more serious than yeast, bacterial and fungal infections on the scalp, poor hygiene, pollution, smoking and oily skin. But soon, your scalp will get itchy and the resulting scratching will cause hair fall and inflammation. Here are some trouble-free home remedies for smelly hair to nip the problem in the root!

Home Remedies for Smelly Hair:

1. Lavender Oil:

Not just a fancy oil, Lavender oil has been proved to be highly effective in treating smelly hair. Not only that, it also provides relief from the itching and inflammation that normally accompany a smelly scalp. It must be applied lightly over the scalp after shampooing thoroughly.

2. Olive Oil:

Speaking from experience, this monarch of all oils, will solve your smelly hair situation in a jiffy. After or before washing your hair, apply it lightly all over the scalp and massage lightly. Olive oil has tremendous soothing properties and will also reduce the itching by a great degree.

3. Garlic Oil:

Garlic, queen of natural anti-fungals, will work its magic on your smell ridden hair. It targets the root problem – the microorganisms causing the smell – and indirectly solves the smelly hair issue as well. Available in markets or easily prepared at home by heating any hair oil with 1-2 cloves of garlic, this oil is a sure shot home remedy for smelly hair.

4. Zero Conditioner:

Yep! Do NOT apply hair conditioner to the scalp, ever! Only your hair needs conditioning, the scalp produces its own supply of oil. By using conditioner on hair roots, you are only ‘feeding’ nutrients to the microorganisms residing there. This will only make your scalp smellier, not softer!

5. Sulfur:

Choose a good sulfur and salicyclic acid containing shampoo to treat smelly hair and scalp. Odor and itching coming from microbial colonies (yeah, gazillions of microbes swarming all over your hair!) are neutralized by these two chemicals.

6. Tea Tree Oil:

Wonders never end! Mix a little tea tree oil in a carrier oil like olive oil or jojoba oil and apply it to your smelly scalp daily. The natural cleansing properties of tea tree oil will get rid of microbial growth on the scalp effectively.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Rinsing the hair with a 1:4 solution of apple cider vinegar and water has proven to help treat smelly hair. It removes that oily layer from the hair and balances the Ph level.

8. Lemon Juice:

Adding the juice of a lemon to any carrier oil like rosemary, olive or jojoba and massaging it into the scalp has shown great results in treating smelly hair. Lemon has natural astringent and anti-bacterial qualities that can solve your smelly problem in no time.

9. Tomato Juice:

Make a hair mask from tomato juice and pulp and massage it into your hair. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before shampooing. Tomatoes are natural pH balancers and cleansers and will give you non-smelly hair for days.

10. Onion Juice:

Sounds smellier than smelly hair? Well, try it and you’ll swear by it forever. Gently apply onion juice to the scalp 30 minutes before shampooing. Wash it off and you will finally be rid of that smell and stickiness of the hair. Onion has powerful anti-fungal and anti-septic properties that will banish your hair woes.
Try any or some of these home remedies and go from being a smelly-Nelly to an odor free Goldilocks!
