6 Herbal Remedies For Knee Swelling

A swollen knee is one of the common problems and can occur due to various reasons like a recent injury,arthritis, infection, pregnancy, obesity, gout etc. The swelling is noticed either around the knee or within the knee joint. Determining the cause for swelling is important, as the treatment depends on it.

Burdock Root

Intake of essential fatty acids is one of the best ways to relieve joint pain and swelling. Burdock Root contains fatty oils, tannins and sterols. The herb is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
You can consume the root as stir-fries, make decoction or take the herb as capsules. To prepare the decoction, you need to chop fresh burdock root (about 2 tbsp). Add the root to water and boil for about 10 minutes. Strain and drink this concoction while still warm. It is recommended to drink about 3 – 4 cups per day.

Ginger

Ginger is a root that has great healing properties. It can be used in the capsule form (about 2g every day). You can also take ginger, peel, grate it well and boil it with some water. Drink this concoction regularly. You can also add ginger to the food that you cook.
Ginger helps in relieving pain associated with stiffness of the knee because of the presence of a chemical called COX-3. It also helps in getting rid of the stiffness and aids better mobility. Ginger can also be applied on the affected area in an oil form to reduce the stiffness, swelling and increase mobility.

Hawthorn Berries

Hawthorn berries helps in decreasing the damage that is caused to the knee by stabilizing the collagen in the cartilages of the joint and the bone. This herb also helps in decreasing the swelling and inflammation caused due to stiffness in the knee. You can consume the berries of this herb or it can also be taken as a capsule, thrice every day (about 100 – 250 mg).

Boswellia Serrata contains acids that help in greatly reducing the pain and inflammation associated with stiffness in the knee.
