Licorice

Licorice is an expectorant, and can provide soothing relief to the mucus membrane. For this reason it has been found to be quite effective in treating chronic cough due to accumulation of mucus. You can slice up a licorice root and steep it in boiling water for at least 10 minutes.

Strain the solution and mix it with one teaspoon of honey. If you take it regularly you will be benefited a lot. The anti-inflammatory and soothing nature of honey will also add to the potency of the licorice root.

Ginger

Ginger contains anti-inflammatory compounds. It can sooth the lining of the throat and provide some relief from the constant irritation there.

Moreover, ginger is antibacterial and antiviral in nature and supports the immune system. You can prepare garlic tea by finely chopping a piece of garlic and boiling it in water for a maximum of 5 minutes. Strain the solution and take it sip by sip. You will get a soothing feeling in the throat. This will reduce the spasms of coughing.

This herb is also a very good cough suppressant. It can also fight bacterial infections and soothe the throat. Sage can be taken with honey or as tea regularly to get relief from frequent spasmodic cough.

This herb has a suppressive effect on cough. It has been seen that thyme can help the throat muscles to relax and prevent frequent spasms.
