20 Effective Home Remedies For Eye Stye

Eye stye or sty is a common infection, which is more likely to affect teenagers. But people of all ages can be inflicted with it. It appears as a red bump on the inside or outside of the eyelid or on the lower part of the eye. It looks like a pimple and is caused due to the blockage of sweat glands near the eyes. They are harmless, but are painful and messy to look at. And for teenagers, appearance is everything!

Symptoms:

Some of the signs and symptoms of eye stye are:
  • Swelling of the eyes.
  • Burning sensation.
  • Pain in the eyes.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Eye tenderness and redness.
  • Itching.
Sometimes, the red bump is filled with pus, which if ruptured can spread the infection. Sometimes, it may also bleed. So, proper care must be taken to treat the stye as soon as possible. In case the styes reoccur, it is advised to see a doctor or a medical practitioner.
Causes:
Some of the causes that lead to the formation of eye styes are:
  • Sleep deprivation.
  • Dehydration.
  • Poor nutrition.
  • Poor hygiene.

20 Useful Home Remedies For Eye Stye:

There are some home remedies that can prevent and cure eye stye. But remember that these remedies will only work in the initial stages, when the stye has formed and there is no infection.

1. Coriander Seeds:

One of the best recommended home remedies for eye stye is the use of coriander seeds. Just boil some coriander seeds in water. Drain out the seeds and wash the stye with the water. Do this twice or thrice a day and your stye will be healed in no time.

2. Tea Bags:

Warm tea bags are known to work wonders on a stye. Take a warm tea bag and place it on the stye until the bag is cool. If the stye is on the inside of the lid, place the bag over the lid. It not only gives relief from the pain but also helps reduce the swelling within 48 hours. Repeat this process twice a day.

3. Guava Leaves:

This not only cures stye but also gives relief from the pain and swelling. Warm some guava leaves, wrap them in a cloth and compress it over the stye. Repeated use will ease the pain and reduce the stye.

4. Garlic Juice:

Garlic juice is well known to cure infection, thanks to its anti bacterial properties. Apply some fresh garlic juice over the affected are by taking care that the juice does not enter the eyes as it may sting a little. Wash it off with lukewarm water after it is dry. It will give relief from the pain and will reduce the stye.

5. Cloves Or Its Oil:

This is another disinfectant that works wonders on a stye. Ground the cloves into a paste. Apply it from one corner of the eyelash to the other end. Apply a little on the stye too. Leave it for five hours to dry and you will notice a drastic change. Cloves may burn a little if it enters the eyes. So, be careful.

6. Potato Peel:

Peel a potato in a double eye shape and place it over the stye. It will reduce the swelling and the pain. It must be repeated twice a day for best results. You will see results in the next day!

7. Turmeric:

Turmeric is a good antiseptic. Mix a pinch of turmeric in a glass of water. Rinse the eye with this water. Do this twice a day to get fast relief.

8. Water And Salt:

This is another effective home remedy for stye eye. Boil one liter of water and add two teaspoons of salt into it. Let the water cool a little, and then dip a towel or soft cloth in it. Compress the affected area with the water and leave it there for twenty minutes until the towel is no longer warm. Do this twice a day until the stye is healed.

9. Cooked Egg:

Applying heat to the stye helps in reducing the swelling. It also relieves the pain. Place a hard boiled egg over the stye. Leave it over the stye for 10 to 15 minutes. The heat from the egg reduces the swelling and heals the stye quickly.

10. Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera is good for treating sore eyes. This plant provides various health benefits. Cut out the pulp from the aloe vera leaf by removing the outside scaly material. Place the pulp over the eye. And leave it there for some time. It will hydrate the eye, soothing the itching and pain. The stye will be cured with repeated use.

11. Acacia Leaves:

If you have a painful stye, then acacia leaves might be the answer to your problem. Boil a few acacia leaves in water. Drain out the leaves and then use the water to rinse the eyes. The soreness of the eye will be healed in no time.

12. Onion Rings:

Onions do not help to completely get rid of eye stye but they help to reduce pain. Cut onion into slices and place the slices over the eyes. Though onion creates a burning or stinging sensation, it speeds up the healing process. Another useful remedy of using onion is to chop onions into slices. When water will come out of the eyes, it will naturally hydrate the eye and relieve the eye pain. It will also cleanse the eye of dirt and dust particles that may cause infection.

13. Tamarind:

Tamarind seeds are also used to provide effective remedy for eye stye. Soak tamarind seeds in water for twelve hours. Then, use the drained out water to rinse the eye. Do this twice a day to get relief.

14. Iron Or Gold:

Take something that is made up of iron or gold. This is a natural remedy, where the metal is rubbed over the stye. It is effective to cure the stye. But one should take care of the kind of metal used. Dirty or rusted metal can cause infection.

15. A Coin:

Take a one rupee coin and wash it with soap and water. Now, rub the coin on a cloth (preferably a little coarse) or place the coin between your palm. This will generate heat and warm the coin. Now, place the coin on the infected eye. You will experience immediate relief.

16. Ear Wax:

This is one of the grossest remedies that can heal eye stye. It does not completely help to improve the condition of the eye stye but eases the itching sensation. Take a little wax out of your ear. Apply it over the stye and you will feel instant relief.

17. Cream Milk:

Get some fresh cream milk. It should be warm enough to sting the eye a little. But at the same time it should be bearable. Apply this warm milk on the eye, concentrating over the stye. Once it is dry, use some milk water to clean the area. Wipe it dry with a clean towel. Stand below a fan for twenty minutes and let it dry properly. During this eye stye treatment, dust particles should not enter the eye.

18. Bitter Gourd:

Bitter gourd works as a detoxifying agent. Cut slices of the gourd and apply it directly on the stye. Leave the slices on the eyes for fifteen minutes and then wash off. Another method is by brewing tea out of the gourd. Drink this bitter gourd tea in the morning on an empty stomach. It will help to cleanse your skin and remove the stye effectively. You can add a pinch of salt for taste. You can also use the left over gourd particles from the tea as a compress. This will help to alleviate the pain.

19. Castor Oil:

Castor oil with hydrating properties is good to cure infections of the skin. Take a few drops of castor oil and apply it over the affected area. Rub it a little but take care not to puncture the stye. Leave it on the eye for fifteen minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Repeat the process until the stye is healed.

20. Bread And Milk:

This is one of the oldest remedies known to cure eye stye. Take a clean and fresh bread slice. Cut the bread double the size of the eye. Soak the bread in warm milk and place it over the eyes. This will make the stye rupture. If it does not, you can scratch it a little. When the pus comes out, clean it with cotton, and then apply antiseptic ointment to prevent infection.
Prevention:
  • Wash your hands before touching your eye.
  • Use good quality eye products.
  • Do not share your cosmetics.
  • Pay attention to proper hygiene of your eyes and wash them at least three times a day.
  • If you use contact lenses, keep them clean and put them on with clean hands.
  • Do not rupture the stye as it will lead to stye eye infection.
  • Remove makeup before going to bed.
  • Have proper sleep.
  • Avoid stress.
Eye stye can affect people of all ages. If you have a clear and healthy skin, then you probably would be able to get rid of the stye easily. Your own body mechanism would be built in such a way that it would detoxify your body and help you to get rid of the stye.
