FOODS TO PREVENT MEMORY LOSS

Memory loss
is not confined to those who are aging. Without constant mental stimulation, physical exercise and proper diet, memory loss may occur prematurely. Musical activities, like learning how to play a musical instrument or just by listening to the radio, can improve memory as well. This does not only confine the brain to information memory, but to muscle and stimuli reaction as well.

Having a good diet
is one of the best ways to keep your memory strong. There are different kinds of food that may aid in sustaining good memory and at the same time help prevent memory loss.

1. Whole Grains

Whole grains enhance attention span, especially of those who have it for breakfast. It has been proven scientifically that those who eat cereals and whole grains for breakfast have a more able memory and longer attention span, along with a more positive mood at the start of the day.

2. Nuts, Seeds, Beans

Because of the high-protein content, just like in fish and poultry, nuts, seeds and beans are a great source of protein. They also have natural and saturated oils that are healthy for the brain and the heart.

3. Fish

Aside from its protein content, fish have omega 3-fats that help in the improvement of brain processes. It does not only enhance memory, it can also be good for the heart since it provides the type of fat that the body needs. Cold-water fish like mackerel, salmon, sardines, herring, albacore tuna and lake trout are some of the few kinds of fish that are high in omega-3.

4. Eggs

Eggs are a very good source of protein and choline, which helps in the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters in the brain are the ones that send the information from one cell to the other. A faster transmission of the information would equate to quick mental activity and active response. Over time, lack of this neurotransmitter may lead to memory loss and is apparent as a symptom for Alzheimer’s disease.

5. Purple Fruits

Blueberries, concord grapes and cranberries are rich in antioxidants and are able to reduce the negative effects of free-radicals and stress.

6. Water

Since our body mass is composed mainly of water, it is important to maintain at least 60% of our body weight with water. Dehydration on a large scale may greatly affect the process of the human body, but contrary to popular belief, the slightest amount of dehydration may also lead to confusion and short-term memory loss.

7. Coffee, Tea and Chocolates

These three favorites contain lots of antioxidants that help in eliminating free-radicals. Because chocolate helps in the production of serotonin, which is known to trigger happy thoughts, the effects goes beyond memory; it can even improve emotional health and relieve stress. Green tea in particular has been known to be rich in antioxidants and can also help with digestive problems
